Chapter 9 - Margaret Had Been Paying Daniel Back
For weeks, I believed Daniel was secretly giving his mother money.
Then Nathan found money moving the other direction.
Smaller transfers.
Margaret to Daniel.
Descriptions:
Reimbursement.
Loan repayment.
Gift.
One transfer landed in an investment account I did not know existed.
Another paid a premium on a life-insurance policy.
Another went to the attorney who created Northstar.
The structure was messy.
Not sophisticated criminal finance.
Family finance designed by people who assumed nobody close to them would ever force it into daylight.
Then Rebecca found something else.
A draft email Daniel never sent.
To a divorce attorney.
If marital accounts are reduced before filing, how are assets held by a parent treated?
My chest went cold.
Rebecca said:
“This still doesn't prove exactly what he intended.”
I nodded.
But one detail would not leave me alone.
At the stairs, I had said:
I’m freezing the account.
Daniel replied:
You’re trying to take half my money and my children.
May you like
I had never mentioned half.
He had been thinking about divorce before the argument began.
