Chapter 8 - Margaret’s Losses Were Real—Just Not That Large
The financial records eventually became clearer.
Margaret had lost money gambling.
A lot.
But not sixty-three thousand dollars during the period Daniel claimed.
Closer to twenty-one thousand.
Where had the rest gone?
A small LLC.
Northstar Family Services.
Registered to Margaret.
Mailing address:
A commercial mailbox.
No employees.
No meaningful business activity.
Then one property appeared.
A condominium in Edina.
Purchased with a down payment that traced partly to Northstar.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Who lives there?”
I already knew before Nathan, our forensic accountant, answered.
“Nobody.”
“Ownership?”
“Margaret’s LLC.”
“Mortgage?”
“Very small.”
Then Nathan showed me an email recovered through discovery in the financial dispute.
Daniel to Margaret:
Once this closes, keep everything in your name until I tell you otherwise.
Date:
Nine days after he accessed my divorce-lawyer email.
I stared at it.

My mother-in-law's gambling was real.
But somebody had been using a real problem to hide something else behind it.
