Chapter 3 - The Camera Was Gone

I opened the security app.

No camera.

Bedroom.

Kitchen.

Garage.

Front door.

Back patio.

The upstairs hallway device had disappeared from the dashboard.

I refreshed.

Nothing.

My hands started shaking.

I called the company.

The technician found the device history.

“It went offline at 10:18 p.m.”

“What time?”

“Ten eighteen.”

I had fallen shortly after ten.

“Was anything uploaded before that?”

“Depends on your storage plan.”

I gave him my account information.

He checked.

Then said:

“There may be cloud footage.”

May.

That word became everything.

“When will I know?”

“We'll need an account security review. There was a password change request last night.”

I stopped breathing.

“I didn't change my password.”

“Someone attempted to.”

“From where?”

“I can't give location data without proper verification.”

Corporate compliance had been my career for eleven years.

I understood the sentence.

It meant:

There is a trail.

Not necessarily an answer.

I called my attorney.

Then the police.

When Daniel returned carrying two coffees, an officer was standing outside my door.

Daniel stopped.

The coffee tray tilted slightly.

Only slightly.

Then his concerned-husband face appeared.

“What's going on?”

I looked at him.

May you like

For the first time since the stairs, he looked uncertain.

That was enough to keep me going.
