Chapter 4 - Margaret Remembered a Different Fall

Margaret gave her statement before I heard hers.

She said Daniel and I had been arguing about money.

True.

She said I was emotional.

Probably true.

She said Daniel never touched me.

False.

According to Margaret, I stepped backward while gesturing and slipped.

She tried to reach me.

Daniel called 911 immediately.

Parts of that were also true.

That was what made lies difficult.

They survived better when surrounded by accurate details.

Police asked whether Margaret had been drinking.

One glass of wine.

Whether I had.

No.

Whether Daniel had a history of violence.

I said no.

That answer bothered me afterward.

Not because he had hit me before.

He hadn't.

But violence had not arrived out of nowhere.

A door slammed beside my head.

A phone taken from my hand during an argument.

Standing in front of the garage exit until I agreed to finish a conversation.

Calling me hysterical when I stopped speaking.

None of those things had seemed large enough individually.

Now I wondered why I had needed them to become large before counting them.
