Chapter 5 - The Gambling Story Almost Made Sense

Daniel really had been sending money to Margaret.

That part was not invented.

She had gambled for years.

Sports apps.

Casino weekends.

Online poker.

She had refinanced her condo once.

Daniel helped quietly.

I knew about some of it.

Not all.

When I confronted him months earlier, he said:

“If Dad were alive, he'd handle it.”

His father had died eight years before.

Daniel had inherited the family role of fixer.

Margaret called.

Daniel paid.

She promised to stop.

Then called again.

It was unhealthy.

But understandable enough that I almost accepted it.

Until I reviewed the transfers.

$800.

$1,200.

$2,000.

$4,500.

Then strangely regular amounts:

$7,500.

$7,500.

$10,000.

$10,000.

Those did not look like desperate gambling repayments.

They looked structured.

I showed the records to my attorney, Rebecca Shaw.

She frowned.

“Where does Margaret bank?”

“I don't know.”

“We should find out through the proper process.”

“Do you think she's lying about the gambling?”

Rebecca tapped one transfer.

“I think we don't know what this is yet.”

Another unanswered question.

Good investigations live on them.

So do bad marriages.
