Chapter 7 - Daniel Started Telling People I Was Confused

My sister received the first call.
Daniel told her grief had affected my memory.
A mutual friend heard that I had been sedated heavily.
Daniel’s colleague heard I had suffered “a breakdown.”
Nobody said I was crazy.
That would have been too obvious.
The language was gentler.
Fragile.
Traumatized.
Confused.
Not herself.
Margaret texted my aunt:
Please don't encourage Emily's anger right now. She needs stability.
Rebecca read the message.
“Save it.”
I did.
Then my sister asked something that shifted the ground beneath me.
“Emily, why did Daniel already know you'd spoken to a divorce lawyer?”
I looked at her.
“I don't know.”
“You never told him?”
“No.”
“Did you tell Margaret?”
“No.”
I checked my email login history.
One unfamiliar device had accessed my account seventeen days before the fall.
From our home network.
Someone had read the consultation confirmation.
Suddenly Daniel’s words at the staircase sounded different.
May you like
You talked to a lawyer.
He had entered that argument knowing something I did not know he knew.
