Chapter 6 - The Camera Had Heard More Than It Saw

The cloud backup survived.

Not everything.

The stairway itself was outside the frame.

The device had been positioned toward the upstairs hall because I installed it to catch Margaret entering our bedroom.

But the microphone recorded the argument.

My voice:

I’m freezing the account tomorrow.

Daniel:

You’re not.

Me:

These are our children.

Daniel:

My mother was here before you. Remember your place.

Then:

Don't come any closer.

A sound.

My scream.

Impact.

Margaret shouting Daniel’s name.

Then thirty-seven seconds of chaos.

The most important part came afterward.

I had never heard it.

Daniel’s voice, distant:

“What do we say?”

Margaret:

“I don't know.”

Daniel:

“She fell.”

Silence.

Then Margaret:

“Daniel…”

And Daniel again:

“She fell.”

That recording did not visually show his hand touching me.

It was not the perfect piece of evidence people imagine exists in stories.

But it told police something important.

The explanation had been discussed before paramedics arrived.
