Margaret did not suddenly develop courage.
Her attorney explained her exposure.
Financial transfers.
False statements.
Possible consequences of helping conceal evidence depending on what investigators could prove.
Then she requested another interview.
Daniel had pushed me.
She admitted it.
He struck my shoulder with his hand.
She saw it.
Then she admitted something harder.
After the fall, Daniel wanted the camera removed.
Margaret unplugged it while he called 911.
“Why?” the detective asked.
She cried.
“I was trying to protect my son.”
That sentence might have been the most honest thing she ever said.
It was also the problem.
Protecting Daniel had become the organizing principle of her life.
When he was a child, she protected him from consequences.
