Chapter 8 - Julian Had Known Mia’s Father
Mia’s father, Eric Hale, died before she turned one.
Officially:
Industrial accident.
Loading dock.
Forklift malfunction.
I had never questioned it enough.
Grief had left no room.
Eric drove trucks for an independent logistics company.
When I checked the old paperwork, I found something I had somehow forgotten.
One of their largest clients:
Valente Distribution.
My hands began shaking.
I confronted Teresa.
“Did Julian know Eric?”
She closed her eyes.
That was answer enough.
“How?”
“He drove sensitive routes.”
“What does that mean?”
“You know what it means.”
“Did Luca know him?”
“No.”
“Julian?”
“Yes.”
“What happened to my husband?”
“I don't know.”
That answer might have been true.
Then Teresa added:
“Eric came here once.”
“When?”
“Three days before he died.”
“Why?”
“He wanted to speak to Luca’s father.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“Who met him?”
