Chapter 13 - Luca Finally Understood Why Mia Had a Chair Beside His Desk

Luca had always believed he protected Mia.
When a photographer took pictures of her outside the estate, he issued warnings.
When staff mocked her tiny suits, he stopped them.
He placed a small green chair beside his desk because she liked sitting there while I worked nearby.
People called it softhearted.
I once found it comforting.
After everything, Luca looked at the chair differently.
“She shouldn't have been here.”
I knew what he meant.
Not that he disliked her.
That a child should never have needed protection because she lived near him.
He had built walls.
Guards.
Cameras.
Rules.
Then congratulated himself when those things protected people from dangers created by the life inside the walls.
“You cared about her,” I said.
“Yes.”
“That part was real.”
He looked at me.
“Was it enough?”
“No.”
May you like
He nodded.
For once, he did not try to negotiate with the answer.
