The paper did not prove Julian had been working for a rival family.
That would have been simpler.
It proved something far more damaging.
Julian had been manufacturing the map of Luca’s world.
Years earlier, Luca’s father, Vittorio Valente, created a system called Falcon.
The hawk was its mark.
Falcon tracked internal risks.
Employees who knew too much.
Drivers asking questions.
Business partners becoming unpredictable.
Family members whose loyalty was uncertain.
When Vittorio died, Luca believed Falcon died with him.
It didn't.
Julian inherited it.

Luca stared at the entry.
“You killed him.”
Julian did not immediately answer.
Then:
“Yes.”
Nobody moved.
But the reason was not what any of us expected.
Vittorio had discovered Julian was secretly helping certain employees leave the organization.
Eric had been one of them.
My husband.
He had learned enough about hidden payments and transport routes to become dangerous.
Julian promised to get him out.
Then Vittorio found out.
He ordered Eric killed.
Julian failed to stop it.
Three days later, Vittorio ordered another killing.
A woman with two children.
Julian decided he would not fail twice.
So he changed Vittorio’s route and leaked it to a rival crew.
Vittorio died.
Julian saved Luca from the same ambush because Luca had not been intended to die.
Then something changed.
Julian discovered how much power came from being the man who controlled danger.
At first he manipulated information because he believed he was containing Vittorio’s brutality.
After Vittorio died, he kept doing it.
One crisis became another.
One lie required another.
Eventually Julian was no longer protecting Luca from the machine.
He was operating it through him.

Julian had genuinely loved Luca like a brother.
He had also built Luca’s dependence on him one manufactured emergency at a time.
