Luca offered us another house.
Security.
Money.
Anything.
I said no to most of it.
I accepted what belonged to Eric’s estate once financial investigators established money had been diverted from him.
That was restitution.
Not a gift.
Mia cried when we left.
Not because she loved the mansion.
Because she wanted her green chair.
Luca carried it to the car himself.
She hugged him.
“Are you coming?”
He looked at me first.
I did not answer for him.
“No,” he told her.
“Why?”
Luca crouched.
“Because I have things I have to fix.”
“Did you break them?”
He almost smiled.
“Yes.”
Mia considered this.
Then:
“You should say sorry.”
“I probably should.”
