Chapter 7 - Luca’s Enemies Always Seemed to Arrive at the Right Time

Once Teresa said it, I began remembering patterns.
A warehouse raided the week before Luca planned to close it.
A rival crew arriving at a restaurant nobody knew Luca would visit.
A federal subpoena landing immediately after an internal accounting dispute.
Each time—
Julian solved something.
Moved money.
Changed routes.
Found a leak.
Removed somebody suspicious.
He had built his reputation by repeatedly saving Luca from disasters.
What nobody seemed to ask was why there were so many disasters only Julian could solve.
I showed Teresa three entries.
She identified initials.
Two belonged to men later accused of betraying Luca.
Both were dead.
One disappeared.
The third entry contained only:
M.H.
My stomach tightened.
Marina Hale.
Maybe.
I had no proof.
The date was two weeks after I began working at the mansion.
Beside it:
Child present. Low risk.
I stared until the letters blurred.
May you like
This wasn't only about Luca.
Somebody had been recording me too.
