Chapter 11 - Luca Did Not Shoot Him

Julian’s gun remained pointed at Luca.
Luca’s weapon remained aimed at Julian.
Mia stood between worlds she could not understand.
I pulled her back.
Julian said:
“You know what happens if this goes outside.”
Luca stared at him.
“My father?”
“Your whole family.”
“You've been running Falcon.”
“I've been keeping this house alive.”
“You sent men after Marina.”
“To recover the paper.”
“They threatened my child.”
Julian looked at Mia.
“They were told not to touch her.”
I hated the sentence immediately.
As though instructions erased what fear had already done.
Luca stepped closer.
Julian tightened his grip.
I expected a gunshot.
Maybe everybody did.
Instead Luca lowered his weapon.
Julian looked confused.
“You want me to trust you?”
“No.”
Luca took another step.
May you like
“I want you alive long enough to explain every name on that paper.”
For a man raised inside a system where betrayal ended in blood, that may have been the hardest thing Luca did all night.
