Chapter 12 - Eric Had Tried to Leave for Us

Julian eventually told me the truth about my husband.
Not voluntarily.
Through lawyers.
Records.
And corroboration from a surviving driver.
Eric had not been stealing.
He had not been betraying Luca.
He had been trying to become a father.
I was pregnant.
He wanted out before Mia was born.
He told Julian:
“I don't want my daughter learning to recognize gunfire.”
That sentence destroyed me more effectively than any detail of his death.
Julian promised help.
Then waited too long.
Vittorio discovered Eric had copied transport records.
The forklift accident was staged.
Julian knew afterward.
And said nothing.
“Why?” I asked when I finally faced him.
His answer was pathetic because it was human.
“I was afraid.”
“You?”
“Yes.”
The feared strategist.
The man who manipulated mob bosses.
Afraid.
That did not make what happened smaller.
It simply stripped away the glamorous explanation.

Sometimes people do terrible things not because they are fearless monsters—
but because fear makes silence easier than courage.
