Chapter 9 - Wade Finally Told Us What Happened on the Table

Wade requested a second interview.
This time he spoke.
When he arrived at Brent’s house shortly after 2:00 a.m., Melissa was confused, feverish, and showing signs of severe abdominal illness.
He demanded they call EMS.
Brent refused.
Why?
“He said Melissa would refuse to go.”
“Did she?”
Wade looked down.
“She said she wanted a hospital.”
That changed everything.
“Then why did you take her to your center?”
Wade closed his eyes.
“Because I panicked.”
He believed transport delay to a farther hospital would cost time.
His center was closer.
He had surgical training.
He convinced himself he could stabilize her and transfer after identifying the problem.
It was reckless.
Outside appropriate emergency infrastructure.
But not, according to Wade, a plan to kill her.
During surgery he found a perforated segment of bowel and severe infection.
Melissa became unstable.
He attempted resuscitation.
She died.
“Why falsify the death story?”
“Because Brent said if anyone learned I operated there, I’d lose my license and the center would collapse.”
“And the specimen?”
“I placed it in a container for pathology.”
“Where is it?”
Wade looked directly at Brent’s attorney across the table.
“I don't know.”
“What about Melissa’s phone?”
“Brent took it.”
“Why?”
“He said it had private marital material.”
Then investigators played the hallway video of Wade punching Brent.
Wade’s face crumpled.
“I found out he waited.”
“How long?”
“At least six hours after she started begging him to take her in.”
The room went silent.
“I told him at eight fifty-two to take her to the ER.”
Wade started crying.
“He wanted the loan signed first.”

That was when the medical mystery stopped being about one illegal surgery.
It became a death built from delay.
