Chapter 8 - Sophie Had Heard More Than Anybody Realized
Sophie did not witness the surgery.
That became clear.
She had been asleep at home while Brent took Melissa away.
A neighbor stayed with her after Brent knocked on the door and said:
“Melissa has to go somewhere.”
The neighbor assumed hospital.
But Sophie had awakened briefly.
She heard Brent talking on the phone in the hallway.
“Wade, just do whatever you have to do.”
Then:
“If you cut her, you fix it.”
She also heard Melissa crying before leaving.
“Don't take my phone.”
Those fragments entered a five-year-old mind.
Days later, grief transformed them into:
Mommy says Daddy let the man cut her.
Not supernatural proof.
Not meaningless either.
Children often preserve fragments adults do not realize they heard.
Then Sophie remembered one more thing.
Before Melissa left, she came into Sophie’s room.
Not a dream.
The actual night.
She kissed her forehead.
Sophie asked:
“Are you going to the doctor?”
Melissa whispered:
“I hope so.”
Then:
“If Nana comes, stay with Nana.”
That was the source of Sophie’s certainty at the funeral.
She had blended her last real conversation with dreams afterward.
The truth was sadder than magic.
