Chapter 7 - Melissa Had Another Appointment Monday
The lender was not the only person Melissa planned to call Monday.
Her calendar contained:
10:30 — Rebecca Long / compliance
Rebecca worked for the Ohio medical group that contracted with Wade’s center.
Melissa had never met her professionally.
Why was she scheduled?
Because Melissa had found billing documents on Brent’s home computer.
Wade’s center had been submitting reimbursement claims involving procedures that appeared to exceed what was documented in patient charts.
Not every discrepancy meant fraud.
Melissa knew that.
She worked as a healthcare data analyst.
She also knew enough to recognize a pattern worth reporting.
She had confronted Brent.
He told her:
“Stay out of Wade’s business.”
Then he made a mistake.
He admitted the refinancing was intended partly to cover repayment exposure if insurers demanded money back.
Melissa began looking deeper.
She found duplicate billing.
Questionable facility charges.
Payments routed through a consulting company Brent managed.
The loan was not simply rescuing Wade.
It was helping both brothers survive an approaching audit.
Melissa copied documents to her phone.
That was why Brent wanted the black bag.
