Chapter 5 - Brent Had Been Photographing Melissa Sick

Brent’s phone contained photographs.
Melissa sleeping on the bathroom floor.
Melissa curled on the sofa.
Melissa vomiting into a trash can.
Instead of seeking emergency help, he photographed her.
Why?
His messages to Wade answered part of it.
Brent:
She’s still refusing the building.
Wade:
Forget the loan. She needs ER if pain is getting worse.
That surprised me.
Wade had told him to seek care.
At 8:52 p.m.
Brent:
She’ll be fine. She always catastrophizes.
Wade:
I’m serious.
At 10:17:
Brent sent a photograph of Melissa lying on the bathroom floor.
Wade replied:
Take her in NOW.
Then communication stopped for nearly three hours.
That changed my understanding.
Maybe Wade had participated in the cover-up.
But Brent had delayed care before Wade ever arrived.
Why?
Another message, this one to a friend:
If she walks into an ER tonight, she’ll call the lender from the bed and kill the deal.
The friend replied:
Dude, forget the deal.
Brent:
You don’t understand what Wade has on the line.
My daughter had been sick enough to lie on a bathroom floor while her husband calculated whether hospitalization would interfere with Monday financing.
He did not need to intend her death for the decision to become unforgivable.
Then investigators discovered something even more chilling.
At 11:58 p.m., Melissa attempted to call 911.
The call lasted four seconds.
Disconnected.
Her phone recorded no second attempt.
Brent claimed he knew nothing about it.
But the phone had been unlocked again one minute later.
Using Brent’s fingerprint profile.
I remembered Melissa’s last text.
Brent says I’m dramatic.
May you like
It no longer sounded dismissive.
It sounded like a man actively deciding whose reality counted.
