Chapter 13 - Brent Finally Cried

Brent cried during a hearing nearly a year after Melissa’s funeral.
Really cried.
Not funeral red eyes.
Not performance.
He heard a recording Melissa had made on her phone the afternoon before she died.
She sounded exhausted.
She was speaking to herself while reviewing financial documents.
“I keep wondering if I’m being unfair.”
A pause.
“Brent says I always assume the worst.”
Then:
“But my name is on something I didn’t sign.”
Another pause.
“If I’m wrong, I’ll apologize.”
Finally:
“If I’m right, I think my marriage is over.”
Brent folded over at the table.
That recording proved nothing about the medical timeline.
It proved something about my daughter.
She was still giving him the benefit of the doubt less than twelve hours before he ignored her pleas for emergency care.
I watched him cry.
I felt nothing satisfying.

Accountability did not bring Melissa back.
It simply stopped his version from replacing hers.
