Chapter 9 - THE PLACE HE THOUGHT NOBODY WOULD CHECK

Texts recovered from the burner phone led detectives to a lakeside cabin in the Poconos owned by a cousin of Brenda’s second husband.
Christopher had used it years earlier for fishing trips.
The last outgoing message from the burner read:
lay low until Donna gets the kid
He was waiting for confirmation that Ellie had been taken.
Only then did he plan to move south with the cash, passports, and whatever remained of the stolen investor money.
Police set quiet surveillance around the cabin.
Michelle was not allowed near it, though she desperately wanted to see his face when they found him alive.
Instead, she sat in Monroe’s office while the operation unfolded by radio.
At 6:18 p.m., a dark SUV arrived.
Ryan got out first.
At 6:22, Brenda arrived in a separate sedan.
At 6:31, a man stepped onto the porch wearing Christopher’s jacket and a baseball cap.
Alive.
Not bleeding.
Not kidnapped.
Just impatient.
Monroe didn’t move.
She listened to the radio and took notes.
At 6:34, officers moved in.
Ryan ran and fell on wet gravel.
Brenda screamed that they had no warrant even though they obviously did.
Christopher reached for the back door, but the porch steps were already covered.
“Subject in custody,” the radio crackled.
Michelle stared at the tabletop.
May you like
For three nights she had imagined morgues, rivers, ditches, construction-site accidents, debt collectors, everything except the simple truth:
He had been hiding, waiting for his wife to be ruined for him.
