Chapter 10 - THE REAL PLAN WAS NEVER JUST TO FAKE A DISAPPEARANCE
Christopher asked for a lawyer immediately.
Brenda did too.
Ryan started talking within ninety minutes.
What came out under questioning was worse than even Michelle expected.
The fake disappearance was only the center of the plan.
Not the whole thing.
The strong clues had been there from the beginning:
Brenda already knew something was hidden under the couch.
Donna was prepared to take Ellie before the police had even formed a theory.
Guardianship papers were drafted before sunrise.
The backpack carried both a tracker and a hidden key.
All of it pointed to a plan bigger than a staged disappearance.
Ryan confirmed it.
Christopher intended to vanish after the senior-housing fraud collapsed.
Brenda intended to blame Michelle publicly, use the planted bag and insurance sheet to strengthen suspicion, and pressure Donna into securing temporary custody of Ellie “for safety.”
Once Michelle was isolated, grieving, and under investigation, Brenda would file emergency business papers claiming Christopher had disappeared during a crisis and that the Bellandi family needed temporary control of his financial interests.
Meanwhile, Donna and Mark would control Ellie’s day-to-day life and, through guardianship arguments, help paint Michelle as too unstable to regain full custody quickly.
In exchange, Brenda promised to pay Donna’s mortgage and settle Mark’s tax debt using money Christopher stole from the development project.
The major twist hit hardest when Ryan explained one last piece.
Christopher had not wanted Ellie merely out of the way.
He wanted her because he knew Michelle would fight harder for her daughter than for herself.
Ellie was leverage.
The green backpack, the tracker, the emergency call to Donna, the rushed custody petition—it had all been designed to move a child like a chess piece while her father fled and her mother drowned in suspicion.
Monroe listened without expression.
Then she asked Ryan, “Did Christopher know Michelle might be arrested?”
Ryan looked down.
“He said if the cops arrested her, everything would get easier.”
Michelle did not cry then.
She felt something colder than grief.
The marriage was over.
