Chapter 6 - THE STORAGE KEY IN THE SEAM

That night Ellie finally said something important.

She was curled under the hotel blanket with her green backpack in her lap when she looked up and whispered, “Daddy said there was a secret treasure in here, but only for emergencies.”

Michelle’s heart stopped.

“Did he show you?”

Ellie nodded and pointed to the inner lining near the bottom edge.

Raymond used a small hotel sewing kit to carefully open a second seam.

Inside was a key taped to a folded dry-cleaning receipt.

The receipt had a handwritten note on the back:

Unit 314 – Iron Gate Storage – keep safe

No date. No signature. But the handwriting was Christopher’s.

Michelle stared at it.

“Why would he hide a storage key in our daughter’s backpack?”

Raymond answered quietly.

“Because he didn’t trust whoever he was working with.”

The next morning, Monroe secured a warrant and met them at Iron Gate Storage on the edge of Elizabeth.

Unit 314 contained three banker’s boxes, a cheap metal lockbox, and a duffel bag.

Inside the boxes were duplicate invoices, hard-copy transfers, and contracts related to the senior-housing development Christopher claimed to be managing. The lockbox held two passports—Christopher’s real one and another under the name Caleb North.

The duffel bag contained cash.

Forty-eight thousand dollars.

And at the bottom, wrapped in a sweatshirt, was a burner phone.

Monroe glanced at Michelle.

“If he hid this from Brenda, there’s a reason.”

A forensic tech powered the phone using a portable charger.

It held call logs, texts, and six saved audio files.

The oldest file was dated eleven days earlier.
