Chapter 8 - THE SENIOR HOUSING PROJECT THAT DIDN’T EXIST

The business records in the storage unit unraveled faster than Monroe expected.
The “senior residential complex” Christopher kept referencing was mostly a shell—permits approved, land partially cleared, publicity photos created, investors reassured—but the construction money had been siphoned through subcontractors connected to Ryan and two companies controlled by Brenda.
There were fake invoices for materials never delivered.
Consulting payments to nonexistent firms.
Transfers into North Carolina, Texas, and finally an account flagged in Belize.
Christopher had not disappeared because someone attacked him.
He had been preparing to flee before the fraud collapsed.
The blood-stained shirt and ring were not evidence of his death.
They were stage props to buy him time while police and family focused on Michelle.
And the benefit sheet under the couch had one purpose: establish motive.
If Michelle looked guilty, Christopher could vanish while civil investigators, creditors, and insurers froze in place.
Then Monroe found the most cynical part of the scheme.
Two weeks earlier Christopher had quietly increased his life insurance and updated secondary trustee instructions related to Ellie’s education account.
Not because he intended to die.
Because he intended to weaponize the paperwork.
Everything had been designed to create chaos.
Everything except one thing.
The hidden storage key.
The burner phone.
The stash Christopher kept outside Brenda’s reach.
Raymond offered the explanation first.
“He didn’t trust his own mother.”
Monroe nodded.
“He probably planned to betray her later. Keep leverage in case she tried to cut him out.”

The irony landed hard.
Christopher’s habit of betrayal had become the only reason Michelle could now prove the truth.
