Chapter 11 - THE QUESTION BRENDA ASKED IN INTERROGATION

Brenda held out longer than anyone expected.
She insisted she was only a worried mother.
She claimed Ryan misunderstood everything.
She said Christopher had manipulated her.
Then Detective Monroe placed one photograph on the table.
It showed the draft guardianship petition recovered from Donna’s printer with Brenda’s electronic statement attached.
Brenda stopped speaking.
Monroe asked, “Who told you the bag would be found under the couch?”
Brenda answered with silence.
Monroe asked, “Who decided Ellie had to be moved first?”
Brenda’s jaw tightened.
Then, for the first time, she lost control.
She leaned forward and asked, “Did they find the second list?”
Monroe said nothing.
Brenda realized what she had done too late.
“There was another list?” Monroe asked calmly.
Within an hour officers returned to the cabin and searched the kitchen wall safe Ryan had forgotten to mention.
Inside was a second printed document.
This one listed not benefits, but post-disappearance steps.
Michelle isolated
Donna files emergency custody
Brenda controls company narrative
Ryan moves cash
Christopher departs
Beside step two, someone had handwritten:
Only if Ellie is secured
Michelle read the second list in silence.
The beginning had been cruel enough.
But Brenda’s question proved something else: even after arrest, she was still thinking operationally.

To her, this was not family.
It was logistics.
