Chapter 4 - THE CAMERA IN THE HALLWAY

That afternoon, Detective Monroe showed Michelle the building footage in full.
At 4:12 p.m. the day before the police were called, Brenda arrived carrying the heavy flowerpot.
At 4:26, Ryan took the service elevator to the eighth floor.
At 4:31, the service elevator camera glitched for eleven minutes.
At 4:43, Ryan returned to the lobby empty-handed.
At 4:45, Brenda left.
Christopher did not come home until 8:10 p.m.
The bag had almost certainly been planted before he vanished.
“Your mother-in-law wanted us to find it,” Monroe said.
“Why?”
“To point us toward you.”
Later that evening, the detective delivered worse news. Ryan had posted edited video clips from the hallway on social media, showing Brenda crying outside the apartment while suggesting Michelle had been “calculating benefits” before anyone even knew Christopher was missing. Comment sections were already turning ugly.
Michelle sat on the hotel bed and stared at her phone.
Brenda wasn’t panicking.
She was managing a narrative.
And someone in Michelle’s own family was helping her.
Raymond, who had been quietly reviewing the benefit sheet photocopy, pointed to one section Michelle had overlooked.
“This isn’t random,” he said.
The sheet listed not only insurance and pension items, but a note beside Ellie’s name:
custody stabilization / trust control / education account
Michelle frowned.
“That doesn’t sound like something Christopher would write.”
“No,” Raymond said. “It sounds like something someone writes when they’re planning what happens to your daughter after you’re removed.”
He tapped the page twice.
“The bag wasn’t just about making you look greedy. It was about making you look dangerous enough to lose your child.”
Michelle thought of Donna asking her to bring Ellie over immediately.
Then of Mark already knowing the police might look at her.
Then of the emergency guardianship inquiry filed at 8:15 that morning.

The trap was getting clearer.
And it had been built long before Ellie heard scratching beneath the couch.
