Chapter 5 - THE PAPERS ON DONNA’S PRINTER

Michelle went to her mother’s house the next morning with Detective Monroe’s approval and two plainclothes officers parked down the block.

She told Donna she had come to pick up old tax papers and some of Ellie’s winter clothes stored in the attic.

Donna opened the door wearing lipstick and worry that looked rehearsed.

“Where’s Ellie?”

“Safe.”

Donna’s expression tightened.

Mark sat at the kitchen table with his laptop open, pretending to be surprised to see her.

Michelle moved through the house quickly. In the small home office off the hallway, she found what Raymond had warned her about.

A draft petition sat in the printer tray.

Emergency Temporary Guardianship of Minor Child: Eleanor Hayes

Ellie’s full legal name.

The petition described Michelle as “emotionally unstable, sleep-deprived, and potentially implicated in the suspicious disappearance of her husband.” It requested immediate placement of Ellie with maternal grandmother Donna Hayes and uncle Mark Hayes “for the child’s protection.”

Attached was a typed statement signed electronically by Brenda Bellandi.

There was also a second unsigned statement.

From Donna.

Michelle stood motionless with the papers in her hands.

Donna appeared in the doorway behind her.

“I can explain.”

Michelle turned.

“Then explain.”

Donna clasped her hands together.

“Brenda said the police would come after you. She said if Ellie wasn’t already with us, child services might put her with strangers.”

“So you were going to take my daughter before I was even charged with anything?”

“We were trying to protect her.”

“From me?”

Mark stood behind Donna now.

“Michelle, calm down.”

She looked at him.

“You already had the petition typed.”

No one answered.

Then Michelle saw something else on the desk.

A manila envelope containing copies of Ellie’s birth certificate, Social Security card, and school records.

Her own family had not just prepared for a possibility.

They had prepared for a handoff.

Monroe later photographed everything and seized the documents voluntarily after Donna, cornered by the detective’s calm tone and badge, agreed to cooperate.

Back at the hotel, Michelle sat in silence for a long time.

The bag under the couch had been ugly.

The guardianship petition was worse.

May you like

Because the bag was meant to destroy her reputation.

The petition was meant to take her child.
