Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING THEY NEVER MEANT HER TO HEAR

They listened to the recording in Monroe’s office.

The audio was messy at first—plates, coffee cups, traffic.

Then Christopher’s voice came through clearly.

“Once the bag is found, they’ll go straight for her.”

Donna sounded nervous.

“Are you sure the police will believe it?”

Brenda answered before Christopher could.

“They will if Michelle panics. That’s why Ellie needs to be with family immediately.”

Mark asked, “And the guardianship?”

Christopher replied, “Filed the same day. Temporary only. Long enough.”

Donna then said the sentence that made Michelle press both hands against her mouth.

“She’s still my daughter.”

Brenda’s voice turned cold.

“Then act like it. You want your mortgage paid off or not?”

Silence.

Then Christopher again:

“Once I’m gone, Michelle becomes the problem. Once she becomes the problem, Ellie gets moved. After that, Brenda handles the business side.”

Monroe paused the recording.

The room was quiet except for Michelle’s breathing.

There it was.

The bag.

The early call.

The guardianship petition.

The demand that Ellie be handed over immediately.

It had all been planned.

Mark’s voice came next, smaller than before.

“What if Michelle doesn’t break?”

Christopher laughed once.

“Then Brenda pushes harder.”

Michelle closed her eyes.

For months Christopher had been distant, secretive, hard to pin down.

She had thought he was lying about money.

She had never imagined he was planning to vanish, frame her, and turn her own mother into part of the machinery.

Raymond sat beside her but didn’t touch her.

Sometimes steadiness is kinder than comfort.

Monroe restarted the audio.

Donna asked the final question.

“And when do we know you’re safe?”

Christopher answered:

“When I’m across the border.”

That was the first time anyone in the room stopped thinking of Christopher as missing.

He was not missing.

He was waiting.
