Chapter 9 - The Notebook Made Avalon Panic

The New Year's dinner from the original plan never happened exactly that way.
Randall and Avalon were already living separately by then.
But I did invite her to lunch.
Expensive restaurant.
Her choice.
Naturally.
I lied.
“I have another fifteen thousand in emergency savings.”
Avalon's wineglass stopped.
Good.
Then I said:
“The bank wants me to bring old statements.”
Her fingers touched her wedding ring.
“What statements?”
“All of them.”
She looked frightened.
I thought I had found the criminal mastermind beneath the cashmere.
Then she said something I did not understand.
“Agatha, if they look far enough back, Randall is going to find out what you did too.”
I stared.
“What I did?”
She realized she had said too much.
Too late.
“What are you talking about?”
Avalon stood.
“I shouldn't have come.”
I grabbed my purse.
“No.”
My voice surprised both of us.
“You've spent two years deciding what I should know. Sit down.”
May you like
She did.
And for the first time, I saw that whatever happened to the $120,000 wasn't the deepest secret in the family.
