No dying father.
No struggling business.
No emergency.
Randall confronted her.
Avalon said:
“I was going to replace it.”
The sentence people say when borrowing has already become taking.
“When?”
Silence.
“You told me Mom was using it.”
“She didn't want it!”
“That doesn't make it yours.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Avalon cried.
Then became angry.
Apparently guilt gets tired too.
“I spent two years handling your mother because you couldn't be bothered to ask her anything directly.”
That sentence reached Randall.
I knew because he stopped talking.
Then Avalon added:
“You don't even know where she lives.”
He did not.
That mattered too.
