Chapter 3 - The First Forty Thousand Dollars Were Still There

The next morning, Randall went to the bank.
I expected theft.
Simple.
Ugly.
Clean.
Instead he called me that afternoon.
“The first four transfers are there.”
“What?”
“Forty thousand dollars.”
Untouched.
The account had originally done exactly what Avalon claimed.
Held money for my future care.
Then something changed.
Transfer five arrived.
Two weeks later:
$8,200 withdrawn.
Transfer six.
$11,500 transferred elsewhere.
Transfer seven.
Another $7,000 gone.
By the time transfer twelve arrived, the account balance was under four thousand dollars.
Randall's voice sounded strange.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“I don't know what she did yet.”
That disappointed the angriest part of me.
I wanted certainty.
Then:
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“The transfers weren't all to Avalon.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Who?”
“A business account.”
“Whose?”
Silence.
“Randall?”
May you like
“Mine.”
That stopped me.
