Chapter 11 - Randall Was Angriest With Me for Twenty Minutes

“You told her?”
His voice cracked.
I had expected rage at Avalon.
Instead I got some of it.
“Yes.”
“You told her to hide this from me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I didn't want you taking over.”
“I was trying to help!”
“I know.”
“You were choosing between food and medicine!”
“I know.”
He stood.
Sat.
Stood again.
“You let me think you were comfortable.”
“Yes.”
“For two years.”
“Yes.”
His eyes filled.
“Do you know what that feels like?”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
That stopped him.
Because I did.
I had spent Thanksgiving discovering that the person I trusted to know my life did not.
He had spent the next weeks discovering the same thing.
Then he said:
“Was sending money wrong?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“You stopped asking me what I needed.”
He looked down.
“And I stopped answering.”
That was my part.
Not theft.
May you like
Not equal blame.
My part.
