Chapter 9 - THE FORGED LEASEThree days later, the bank produced the full file.

There it was.
A three-year lease.
Professional formatting.
Monthly rent matching my usual transfer.
Start date: January 1.
Tenant: Jessica Mercer.
Landlords: Robert and Ellen Mercer.
And at the bottom:
my forged signature.
Grace was not mentioned.
That detail hurt unexpectedly.
Bella had erased my daughter from the paperwork entirely.
The basement wasn’t home.
It was a revenue unit.
I wasn’t family.
I was an income line.
The metadata showed the lease had been created on Bella’s laptop.
The final PDF was generated at 11:43 p.m. on December 20.
Two days before Mom left the eviction note.
One day later, Bella emailed Mom:
Need basement clear before verification. Don’t let Jessica turn this emotional.
Nina showed me the email in silence.
I read it once.
Then again.
“Don’t let Jessica turn this emotional.”
As if throwing a child out before Christmas was merely an underwriting inconvenience.
That sentence ended any remaining doubt about Bella’s intent.
But the bank found something even worse in the same email chain.
A second attachment.
Not a lease.

A deed-related form.
And my parents had never seen it.
