Chapter 5 - MY MOTHER KNEW MORE THAN SHE ADMITTEDMom came over that afternoon.

She did not knock softly.
She entered furious.
“You brought a bank investigator into family business?”
Nina didn’t react.
“I came because a mortgage application appears to contain false representations.”
Mom turned to me.
“You could have handled this privately.”
I almost smiled.
“Like the eviction note?”
Her face tightened.
Dad finally spoke.
“Ellen, did you know about the inspection?”
Mom went silent.
That was enough.
Dad stood slowly.
“Did you know?”
She looked at Bella’s paperwork on the table.
“I knew there were deadlines.”
“What deadlines?”
“The bank needed things organized.”
“Organized?”
My voice sharpened.
“You mean Grace and me gone.”
Mom looked at me with irritation rather than guilt.
“Bella said the basement situation was confusing the file.”
There it was.
Not innocence.
Participation.
Maybe she did not understand every financial mechanism.
But she understood enough to throw us out on schedule.
And still expected my payments to continue.
Dad stared at his wife like he was meeting her again.
“For a loan?”
Mom folded her arms.
“For the family.”
Whenever someone says for the family, I have learned to ask which family member is being sacrificed.
May you like
This time it was obvious.
Me.
