Chapter 12 - THE CONFRONTATION BELLA COULDN’T TALK HER WAY OUT OFBella finally agreed to meet through attorneys.

She arrived in a red coat, expensive boots, and the same expression she wore at Thanksgiving when she called me a freeloader.
For ten minutes, she denied intent.
She said the lease was “draft language.”
The signature was an “administrative placeholder.”
The trust documents were “future planning.”
Grant’s debts were “temporary.”
Then Nina’s attorney placed the email on the table.
Need basement clear before verification. Don’t let Jessica turn this emotional.
Bella stopped talking.
I asked only one question.
“Did you know Grace would have six days to leave before Christmas?”
Her lawyer looked at her.
Bella looked at me.
Finally:
“Yes.”
There it was.
No misunderstanding.
No pressure.
No technicality.
She knew.
“And you still did it?”
Her eyes hardened.
“You always land on your feet.”
That answer hurt more than an apology would have.
Because it revealed the logic.
I was the competent sister.
The one who solved problems.
The one who could absorb damage.
So Bella had decided I was safe to sacrifice.
“You thought because I survive things,” I said quietly, “you had permission to cause them.”
May you like
She looked away.
Meeting over.
