Chapter 2 - THE FILE BELLA BUILT WITH MY MONEYThe woman introduced herself as Nina Pierce, an investigator working for Heritage Community Bank’s mortgage fraud unit.

Dad looked pale.

Not embarrassed.

Afraid.

Nina placed her briefcase on my small kitchen table and removed a thick stack of documents.

“At this point,” she said, “I’m not accusing you of anything. I’m here because your records were used in a loan application without clear evidence that you authorized it.”

I stared at her.

“What loan?”

She turned the first page toward me.

It was a cash-out refinance application on my parents’ house.

Borrowers: Robert and Ellen Mercer.

Monthly basement rental income: $1,450.

Tenant: Jessica Mercer.

Lease term: 36 months.

My pulse slowed in that strange way it does when panic becomes concentration.

“I don’t have a three-year lease.”

Nina nodded.

“That’s one of the problems.”

The application included copies of my monthly transfers.

Screenshots of rent memos.

Utility payments.

The furnace repair invoices.

Even Dad’s prescription receipts.

Bella had taken everything I paid to help my parents and reshaped it into evidence that I was a long-term income source attached to their property.

My father sat across from me with both hands pressed together.

“Bella told us the bank needed proof the house had stable household income.”

“And you gave her my records?”

He looked down.

“Your mother did.”

That hurt more than I expected.

Nina continued.

“The file was flagged after your January transfer disappeared and the pharmacy account was removed. That caused automated verification failures.”

I almost laughed.

So canceling my payments hadn’t merely angered my family.

It had broken the lie.

Nina pulled out another page.

At the bottom was an electronic signature.

Jessica Mercer.

Not mine.

I looked at Dad.

His face crumpled.

“I didn’t know.”

May you like

I believed him.

That did not make him innocent.
