Chapter 9 - EVERYBODY WHO HELPED HIM STAY RESPECTABLE

Kelsey had dated Ryan before Mia.

She was nineteen.

He was twenty-four.

Their relationship lasted eight months.

Kelsey had saved every threatening email because her father was an insurance investigator and had taught her never to delete evidence when someone scared her.

She never reported Ryan.

At nineteen, she believed no one would take her seriously because some of the first recordings had been consensual.

Ryan used that against her.

If you agreed once, he told her, you agreed forever.

Then Linda stepped in.

Kelsey still had an email Linda sent after Ryan bruised her face badly enough that she missed college classes.

I’m sorry things became physical. Ryan is intense, but you knew that. Please don’t destroy his future because neither of you understood boundaries.

Kelsey had replied:

He locked me in his room for six hours.

Linda never answered.

Instead, Ryan received a payment from his mother two days later.

He used part of it to hire an attorney.

The pattern became impossible to explain away.

Linda had not merely forged documents.

She had funded containment.

That afternoon, prosecutors obtained warrants for her devices and home office.

By evening, police removed computers, external drives, tax folders, and an old desktop tower from her basement storage room.

News crews arrived.

Neighbors stood on lawns.

For the first time, the Cole family could not manage the story privately.

Ryan remained held after a judge reviewed the basement circumstances, the gasoline, the recordings, and his threats regarding release.

Linda was not yet charged.

Her lawyer called the search “an outrageous attempt to criminalize motherhood.”

Detective Chen read that statement to me without expression.

Emma muttered, “That’s impressive.”

“What?”

“Making forgery sound maternal.”

I almost laughed.

Then Chen put another document on my hospital tray.

The foreign-account access log showed Linda had signed into Ryan’s payment dashboard forty-one times in the previous year.

But the remote administrator controlling the dead-man switch was not Linda.

The IP address only passed through her house.

The actual account used a different authentication key.

For several hours, investigators assumed Ryan had hidden it there.

Then they found a device name in the server logs.

MCOLE-ADMIN

Ryan’s middle initial was J.

May you like

Linda’s first initial was L.

We had just discovered someone else in the Cole family.
