Chapter 6 - WHY EMMA HAD STAYED AWAY

I turned on Emma that afternoon.
It wasn’t fair.
Pain rarely chooses fair targets.
“You knew something was wrong six months ago.”
“Yes.”
“You saw the payments.”
“Yes.”
“You saw the signals.”
“Rachel—”
“Why didn’t you come sooner?”
Her face changed.
Not defensive.
Wounded.
“Because the first time I tried, you told me never to come back.”
I remembered.
A year earlier, Emma had flown home unexpectedly after I called her crying and then denied anything was wrong.
Ryan found out.
That night, he showed me a folder containing intimate photographs he had taken without my knowledge.
Then he brought up Emma’s employer.
Her address in Lisbon.
Her boyfriend’s name.
“He said if I let you near me again, he would send everything to your company.”
Emma nodded.
“You called me the next morning.”
I remembered the exact words.
Stop trying to save me. I don’t want you in my life.
I had meant:
Please live far enough away that he cannot destroy you too.
Emma had heard only the sentence I was able to say.
“I believed you,” she whispered.
I started crying.
“So this is my fault?”
“No.”
“Then why—”
“Because neither of us knew what to do.”
That stopped me.
There it was.
No heroic sister who had flawlessly orchestrated my rescue.
No brilliant victim who had beaten Ryan at his own game for years.
Two frightened women improvising inside a situation neither understood completely.
Emma had begun preserving the account records because it was the only thing she could safely reach.
Then three months earlier, I started using the split-transfer codes.
At first, I refused to let her contact police.
I was terrified Ryan would release the videos.
So Emma consulted an attorney and a digital-forensics specialist in Portugal without giving them my name.
They told her to preserve everything.
Wait for a clear emergency.
Document.
Do not hack.
Do not confront.
Then the emergency transfer arrived.
Emma was already in Chicago.
That surprised me.
“Why?”
Her mouth trembled.
“Because I stopped believing you when you said you didn’t want me.”
She had flown in two days earlier and stayed at a hotel six blocks away.
She was waiting for permission I might never give.
The split transfer gave it.
For the first time since I was nineteen, I reached for my sister and let her hold me.
Then Detective Chen called.

They had found another forged consent form.
This one had been scanned on a device registered to Linda Cole’s home office.
