Chapter 3 - THE ACCOUNT IN MY NAME

The foreign account had started as Ryan’s idea.
Six months earlier, one of the websites where he sold my images had suspended his payout profile after a tax-verification problem.
He blamed me.
For three days.
Then he told me to contact Emma.
Emma worked in financial compliance for a European payments company in Portugal. Ryan knew that much. He believed she could help me open a legitimate multi-currency account outside the United States.
He wanted the account in my name.
“If anyone asks,” he said, “you’re the creator.”
I understood what he was doing.
He wanted income hidden behind me.
He wanted the tax records behind me.
If anything went wrong, he wanted me standing first in line.
So I called Emma.
That was the first honest conversation we’d had in almost a year.
I couldn’t tell her everything because Ryan was in the next room.
But Emma knew my voice.
She set up nothing illegal. She simply helped me navigate a legitimate account application and made sure I—not Ryan—remained the sole legal owner. She also helped me activate a secondary recovery method he didn’t know about.
Later, when Ryan demanded access credentials, I gave them to him.
But Emma could still see the account.
And she noticed something.
The money stayed there.
Ryan bragged about what he was earning, but he rarely withdrew it.
Instead, he treated the balance like a scoreboard.
That gave Emma time to preserve every transaction.
Eventually I found a way to communicate without messages.
Ordinary transfers remained whole.
A transfer split into two amounts ending in 17 and 43 meant:
He hurt me again.
Two amounts ending in 09 and 11 meant:
Call me when he leaves.
And the combination I used that final night meant only:
Come now. Police.
Ryan never noticed because he cared about totals, not patterns.
Now the account held more than $280,000.
Money made from my body.
Emma had never touched a dollar.
Neither had I.
At 5:00 a.m., investigators found something else while tracing the payment history.
The platform account feeding those transfers had two administrator profiles.
One belonged to Ryan.
The second used an encrypted recovery address that neither Emma nor I recognized.
Someone else had access to his archive.
Someone else could potentially trigger the release.
When Detective Chen told us, Emma looked toward the hospital door.
“Linda?”
Chen shook her head.
“We don’t guess.”
May you like
Then she added:
“But we’re going to find out.”
