Chapter 10 - THE BROTHER NOBODY HAD MENTIONED

Ryan had an older brother.
Michael Cole.
Thirty-four.
Former software engineer.
I had met him exactly twice.
Ryan said they barely spoke.
Linda said Michael lived in Seattle and had cut himself off from the family after an argument over their father’s estate.
That was true.
It was not the whole truth.
Michael had written the dead-man system.
Three years earlier.
Investigators found the source code on one of Linda’s archived computers, along with emails between the brothers.
At first, Michael believed Ryan operated a consensual adult-content business.
Then he discovered one of the women had complained.
He confronted Ryan.
Ryan threatened him.
Michael walked away.
That was the family story.
Except he didn’t walk far enough.
He left the automation running.
And after he moved to Seattle, Linda continued paying him quarterly “maintenance fees.”
Three earlier details suddenly changed meaning.
Linda knew about the videos at the hospital because she had helped administer Ryan’s business.
The forged releases flowed through her home because she created the paper defense.
And Ryan stopped struggling the instant I told Emma to lock the foreign account because he knew the account freeze could activate software his own brother had built to destroy evidence and punish victims simultaneously.
The most disturbing revelation was not that Michael created it.
It was what he had changed before disappearing from the family.
Six months earlier, Michael quietly altered the system.
He removed the public-release destinations.
The files Ryan believed would flood the internet no longer went anywhere public.
Instead, the dead-man process copied the entire private archive—including Ryan’s internal messages, customer records, payment ledgers, and administrative history—to an encrypted evidence repository.
Michael had turned his brother’s weapon into a backup.
He never told Ryan.
He never told Linda.
And he never told police.
Why?
Because he was terrified.
When federal investigators reached him in Seattle, Michael immediately asked for a lawyer.
Then he gave them the encryption key.
The archive opened that night.
Inside were not merely videos of women.
There were messages showing who paid Ryan, who knew content was coerced, who requested increasingly degrading material, and how Ryan discussed each woman after cameras stopped.
The account he threatened to use against me had preserved the evidence that could bury his entire operation.
But Michael’s involvement created a new problem.
He had known enough to intervene months earlier.
And he had chosen secrecy instead.
The case now had another witness.
May you like
Another accomplice.
And another member of the Cole family explaining why silence had seemed safer than action.
