Chapter 8 - I LET THE MONEY STOP

At 9:00 p.m., investigators began the shutdown.
Ryan’s phone remained inside a forensic isolation unit, still sending simulated heartbeat messages to the remote server.
The international payment provider restricted withdrawals without technically closing the account.
Then technicians disabled one distribution credential at a time.
For fourteen minutes, nothing happened.
At minute fifteen, one dormant upload process activated.
My stomach dropped.
A file moved.
Emma grabbed my hand.
The analyst stopped it before it reached a public site, but not before a short private preview hit a subscriber channel that investigators had not yet identified.
Twenty-seven people downloaded it.
Twenty-seven.
That number hurt more than twenty-seven thousand would have.
It was small enough to imagine every person.
The clip showed my face.
Nothing explicit was visible, but anyone who knew me could identify me.
Ryan’s lawyer somehow learned about the leak within hours.
By morning, he was already constructing his defense.
His statement called me his “long-term romantic and creative partner” and described the videos as part of “a private adult content business now being mischaracterized following a painful breakup.”
Painful breakup.
I was still hospitalized from burns.
My wrists still carried rope abrasions.
Yet he was trying to turn the entire basement into branding.
My employer called before noon.
I worked as a project coordinator for an architecture firm downtown. I had prepared myself to be fired, though there was no rational reason they should.
Instead, my manager said:
“Take whatever leave you need. Security has been notified. Nobody here is allowed to discuss or distribute anything.”
I cried after hanging up.
Not because he had saved my job.
Because kindness had become so unfamiliar that receiving it hurt.
By afternoon, investigators identified four additional women in Ryan’s archive.
Two refused contact.
One said she needed time.
The fourth called Detective Chen back within twenty minutes.
Her name was Kelsey Ward.
Her first question was:
“Did his mother finally get arrested too?”
Linda had not.
Not yet.
But Kelsey had something investigators did not.

Emails.
Seven years of them.
