Chapter 11 - HIS FAMILY STARTED BLAMING EACH OTHER

Once Michael cooperated, the Cole family fractured almost immediately.

Ryan told investigators Michael had created everything.

Michael said Ryan lied about consent from the beginning.

Linda insisted both sons manipulated her.

Emails disproved all three attempts to simplify the past.

Michael had not participated in physical abuse.

But eventually he knew the archive contained coercive material and maintained infrastructure anyway.

Linda never entered the basement while I was tied to the chair.

But she forged documents, managed disputes, tracked payouts, and helped Ryan present criminal conduct as a legitimate content business.

Ryan remained the one who assaulted women.

The one who restrained me.

The one who poured gasoline around my chair.

Responsibility had layers.

It did not disappear because blame could be shared.

Michael’s cooperation allowed investigators to identify several paying users who clearly knew women were being harmed. Others appeared to believe they were buying staged content.

That distinction mattered legally.

I appreciated that prosecutors made it.

I did not want strangers convicted merely because I hated what Ryan had done.

I wanted facts.

The untouched money in my foreign account was frozen by court order pending restitution proceedings.

Emma asked if that bothered me.

“No.”

It never felt like money.

Every dollar represented a moment I wanted forgotten.

Then Ryan made one last attempt to reach me.

His attorney delivered a letter.

I almost threw it away.

Instead, I gave it to Detective Chen unopened.

She read it first.

Then asked whether I wanted to know what it said.

“Yes.”

Ryan claimed he loved me.

He said the gasoline was a bluff.

He said he would never actually have dropped the match.

He said I knew he had “dark needs” when I moved in.

And he wrote:

None of this would have happened if Emma had stayed out of our relationship.

For two years, I had taken sentences like that apart until I could find a version where I was responsible.

This time I didn’t.

I handed the letter back.

“Put it with everything else.”

That was the first day I understood recovery could begin before the court case ended.
