Chapter 12 - I WALKED INTO COURT WITH MY FACE UNCOVERED

The detention hearing was the first time I saw Ryan after the basement.

I almost didn’t recognize him.

No dark T-shirt.

No bare feet on the concrete.

No camera in his hand.

Just a thirty-year-old man in county-issued clothing sitting beside his lawyer beneath fluorescent courtroom lights.

Smaller than the person in my nightmares.

His attorney argued that the relationship involved consensual sexual content that “later became toxic.”

The prosecutor did not argue emotionally.

She played thirty-four seconds from the lamp camera.

Not the worst part.

Just enough.

Ryan ordering me not to look away.

Me asking him to stop.

The sound of the chair moving.

His response:

“You know what happens when you say no.”

Then silence.

No lawyer could make that sentence romantic.

The judge maintained detention.

Outside the courtroom, reporters waited behind barriers.

My lawyer had arranged another exit.

I chose the front.

Emma looked at me.

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

That was why I did it.

I walked past cameras with my face uncovered.

I did not make a statement.

I did not owe anyone details of what Ryan had done to my body.

But I was tired of hiding as though privacy violations created shame in the person whose privacy was stolen.

The photographs appeared online by afternoon.

So did supportive comments.

So did cruel ones.

People asked why I stayed.

Why I helped open the payment account.

Why I hadn’t gone to police after the first assault.

Why I apparently knew enough to build secret signals but not enough to leave.

Emma found me reading them.

She took the phone from my hand.

“People love imagining they would behave perfectly inside danger they’ve never experienced.”

I looked at her.

“When did you become wise?”

“Portugal.”

“Is that included in the tax rate?”

“Nothing is included in the tax rate.”

I laughed.

It surprised both of us.

Then Detective Chen called.

Michael’s decrypted archive had revealed a backup drive Ryan believed he destroyed.

Investigators knew exactly where it had once been stored.

Linda’s house.

And Linda had lied under oath about never possessing it.
