Chapter 28 - THE LIFE AFTER

```
The legal fallout took nearly a year.
Linda was indicted on two counts of felony child endangerment, grand larceny, and wire fraud. The titanium capsule was never recovered from the municipal sewer system, but the digital trail she left behind was enough to secure a twenty-year sentence.
Dave lost his house, but he and Mark managed to salvage the contracting business, restructuring it into a smaller, honest operation. The betrayal left a permanent scar on their friendship, but they were slowly learning to trust each other again.
It was a Sunday evening. The autumn air was cool and quiet.
Sarah sat in the rocking chair in the nursery, holding Lily against her chest. The baby was a year old now, healthy, vibrant, and completely unaware of how close she had come to not existing at all.
Down the hall, Mark was packing the last of Linda’s belongings into cardboard boxes to be donated. He found an old, faded photograph pressed inside a dusty Bible. It was a picture of Mark as a toddler, sitting on his biological mother’s lap. Linda stood in the background of the photo, staring at the woman with an expression of cold, naked envy.
Mark stared at the photo for a long time. His biological mother had died in a tragic, unexplained fall down a flight of stairs when he was four. Linda had married his father six months later.
He didn't show the photo to Sarah. He didn't call the police. The statute of limitations had expired decades ago, and he finally had peace in his home.
Mark struck a match, held it to the corner of the photograph, and dropped it into the metal trash can, watching the past burn away before walking down the hall to his wife and daughter.
