Chapter 10 - Linda Became His Mother by Erasing the First One
David confessed three days later.
Not to police first.
To Ryan.
With attorneys present.
He did not admit helping Linda stage the 1993 bathtub incident.
He said he did not know for certain what she had done that day.
But he admitted something almost as devastating.
Within weeks, he stopped believing Susan had deliberately endangered Ryan.
Too many details were wrong.
Nancy’s statement.
Susan’s timeline.
Linda’s changing account.
David suspected Linda had exaggerated—or created—the emergency.
“Why didn’t you correct it?” Ryan asked.
David cried.
“Because I already had temporary custody.”
Silence.
“And?”
“Your mother was angry.”
“Of course she was.”
“She threatened to take you to Kentucky.”
“She wanted her baby back.”
David covered his face.
“I was scared.”
Ryan stared at him.
“So you let everybody call her crazy.”
David said nothing.
That was the answer.
Three clues finally locked together.
First:
Linda had begun documenting my exhaustion before Lily was born.
Second:
She had researched emergency custody and framed our possible move as me “taking the baby away.”
Third:
Thirty-three years earlier, Linda had been the key witness in an almost identical narrative used to remove infant Ryan from Susan.
Then came the worst part.
David admitted he began an affair with Linda less than a year after separating from Susan.
Linda’s own marriage ended.
Two years later, she married David.
She did not simply become Ryan’s stepmother after another woman failed.
She became central to the story that made that failure believable.
And Ryan grew up grateful to her for “staying.”
That was Part 10’s truth.
Linda had learned that if she could make a mother look unstable at exactly the right moment, the family would reorganize itself around the story.
It worked once.
She built a marriage and a maternal identity on top of it.
Three decades later, when I threatened her place at the center of Ryan’s family by moving away with Lily, she reached for the same method.
An exhausted mother.
A baby near water.
A dramatic rescue story.
A visible injury.
Emergency authorities.
Only this time something went wrong.
I entered the bathroom too early.
