Chapter 23 - EMERGENCY CUSTODY

```
The fluorescent lights of the county jail holding cell buzzed violently. Sarah sat on the metal bench for fourteen hours before the heavy steel door finally opened.
Mark stood in the hallway with a bail bondsman. His face was gray.
They walked out into the bright afternoon sun in silence. When they reached Mark’s truck, he didn't unlock the doors. He just leaned against the side of the vehicle.
"The police gave Linda the laptop," Mark said hollowly. "They viewed it as personal property. She formatted the drive."
Sarah felt the last remaining air leave her lungs. "The printed ledgers. They were on the desk."
"Gone," Mark said. He looked at the asphalt. "And it gets worse. Linda used your arrest last night to file an emergency petition. She’s claiming you are violently stalking the family. The judge expedited the hearing for tomorrow morning. She’s asking for permanent, sole guardianship of Lily."
"Mark, you have to testify," Sarah pleaded, grabbing his jacket. "You saw the shell company. You know she stole the money."
"It doesn't matter!" Mark shouted, finally breaking. He pulled away from her, tears spilling down his face. "Without the proof, it's just my word against hers! And even if she did steal the money, Sarah, it doesn't explain the baby! Embezzling money doesn't make someone hold a three-week-old newborn under water! The CPS worker thinks you did it, and you're just inventing this financial conspiracy to deflect blame!"
Sarah stared at him. He was right. The money wasn't enough.
"The cloud," Sarah whispered.
