Chapter 16 - THE MOTEL ROOM

```
The neon sign of the Starlight Motor Inn buzzed through the thin curtains, casting a sickly red glow over the police report in Sarah’s hands.
It had been four days since Child Protective Services took three-week-old Lily. Four days since Mark asked Sarah to pack a bag and leave their home, his eyes full of a terrified, heartbreaking pity. He believed Linda. He believed his own wife had snapped under the weight of postpartum depression and tried to drown their infant in the hallway bathroom.
Sarah read the responding officer’s notes for the fiftieth time.
Suspect located in hallway, hysterical. Witness (Linda Hughes, step-grandmother) actively retrieving infant from toilet bowl. Plumbing severely backed up. Witness claims suspect forced infant into water. Suspect claims witness did it.
Sarah pressed her palms against her eyes until she saw stars. She hadn't snapped. She had walked out of the nursery to get a fresh wipe, heard a wet, heavy splash, and ran into the bathroom to find Linda holding the toilet lid down while Lily screamed from inside the bowl.
Sarah’s phone vibrated on the cheap laminate nightstand. It was an automated email receipt from their shared home security account.
Device Offline: Hallway Nursery Monitor.
Sarah sat up. The camera base wasn't in the nursery. Because of the Wi-Fi dead zone in the baby's room, Mark had plugged the main recording hub into the outlet in the hallway. The same hallway right outside the bathroom door.
She opened the attachment. The device hadn't just gone offline. It had been manually factory-reset at 4:12 PM today.
