Chapter 26 - THE CPS INTERVIEW

```
The house was spotless. Linda had arranged fresh flowers on the kitchen island. She sat across from Mrs. Higgins, the senior CPS supervisor, holding a cup of herbal tea.
The front door opened. Mark walked in, followed closely by Sarah.
Linda stood up, instantly adopting a look of panicked distress. "Mark, what is she doing here? The restraining order—"
"I brought her," Mark interrupted, his voice perfectly even. He looked at Mrs. Higgins. "You're here to finalize the recommendation for permanent custody, correct?"
"Mr. Collins, your wife cannot be on these premises," Mrs. Higgins said sternly, reaching for her phone. "I am calling the police."
"You can call them in exactly two minutes," Mark said. He placed his phone in the center of the kitchen island, right next to Linda’s teacup. "But before you sign a document giving my daughter to this woman, I want to clarify one detail about the incident."
Linda took a step back, her eyes darting to the phone. "Mark, don't let her manipulate you."
Mark ignored her. He looked directly at Mrs. Higgins. "My stepmother claims she walked into the bathroom and found my wife drowning my daughter."
"That is what the evidence and the witness statements suggest, yes," Mrs. Higgins said carefully.
"I have the audio backup from the hallway security hub," Mark said.
Linda dropped her teacup. It shattered against the hardwood floor, dark liquid pooling around the ceramic shards.
