Chapter 7 - Dad’s Birthday Was Also Vanessa’s Deadline
Vanessa’s management company eventually produced internal correspondence.
A compliance employee had flagged Lily’s release three weeks before Dad’s birthday.
The IP address did not match addresses usually associated with me.
The signature certificate contained inconsistencies.
The company asked Vanessa to obtain fresh confirmation from Lily’s parent before another campaign launched.
Deadline:
Monday after Dad’s birthday.
Suddenly the party timing made sense.
Vanessa needed me to sign.
I had ignored two earlier emails because they were buried in promotional-looking messages from her management company.
Mom knew.
Vanessa knew.
Dad knew there was a “paperwork issue.”
Then came a group text created five days before the party.
Vanessa:
Sarah already said no when I brought up Lily content last year.
Mom:
Then don’t ask it that way.
Dad:
Leave Sarah alone.
Mom:
Robert, stay out of this.
Vanessa:
If she thinks I can press charges after something happens Saturday she’ll sign just to make it disappear.
Dad:
What exactly is supposed to happen?
No response for eleven minutes.
Then Mom:
Nothing serious. Sarah gets embarrassed. Sarah loses her temper. Then everybody talks like adults.
I stared at the phrase.
Nothing serious.
