Chapter 2 - Lily Had Been Content Before I Knew It

The next morning, Lily asked:

“Am I famous now?”

I looked at her across my kitchen table.

“Why would you ask that?”

“Aunt Vanessa said lots of people saw me.”

My stomach tightened.

“How many times has Aunt Vanessa filmed you?”

Lily shrugged.

“A lot.”

“When?”

“At Grandma’s.”

My mother watched Lily two afternoons a month when my work schedule became difficult.

I had always been grateful.

Now I asked:

“Did Vanessa ask you before filming?”

“Sometimes.”

“And if you said no?”

Lily looked down at her cereal.

“She said I was being boring.”

I swallowed.

“What did Grandma say?”

“That Aunt Vanessa needs videos because it’s her job.”

I kept my voice soft.

“Did they ever tell you not to tell me?”

Lily hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Grandma said you don’t like fun videos.”

That answer hurt.

I spent the morning searching Vanessa’s accounts.

Not casually.

Systematically.

Old reels.

Sponsored posts.

Archived clips.

Brand collaborations.

There was Lily.

At seven, trying makeup Vanessa had handed her.

At six, opening a toy box.

At a family barbecue wearing matching pajamas with Vanessa.

One clip showed Lily crying because Vanessa hid her stuffed rabbit.

Caption:

SHE THOUGHT BUNNY WAS GONE FOREVER 😂

Millions of cumulative views across several posts.

I had never seen most of them.

I had told Vanessa years earlier:

“No sponsored content with Lily.”

Her answer had been:

“Relax. I’m not exploiting your kid.”

Apparently she decided unsponsored filming was different.

Then sponsored clips appeared anyway.

The advertisements were sometimes subtle.

Clothes.

Snacks.

Children’s accessories.

Family products.

Melissa reviewed them with me.

“If she commercially used Lily’s likeness without valid parental consent, there may be issues. But we need documents.”

“Monday.”

“Yes.”

She had already traced the phrase from the livestream.

The release.

Vanessa had a management company.

Her manager’s assistant eventually confirmed that a compliance meeting was scheduled Monday morning regarding minor-appearance documentation.

Someone had raised a question about whether Vanessa had valid parental authorization for Lily.

I stared.

“She forged my consent?”

“We do not know that yet.”

“Then how has she been posting sponsored footage?”

“We’re finding out.”

That afternoon, Mom sent another message.

Vanessa’s attorney says you committed assault.

Then:

You should think very carefully before destroying your sister’s career.

And finally:

Dad and I are revising our estate plan tomorrow.

I showed Melissa.

She saved everything.

“No response?”

“No.”

I hated silence.

My family had trained me to explain myself.

If Mom became angry, I explained.

If Vanessa cried, I explained.

If Dad became disappointed, I explained.

Now every explanation risked becoming another sentence they could screenshot.

So I said nothing.

At 4:17 p.m., Vanessa emailed me.

Subject:

RESOLUTION

Attached:

A release.

A confidentiality agreement.

A statement saying the party incident was a “misunderstood family prank.”

And a clause requiring me to authorize prior use of Lily’s likeness.

Retroactively.

In exchange, Vanessa would:

withdraw the $1,500 demand,

“decline to pursue charges,”

remove the edited assault clip,

and ask Mom and Dad to “reconsider estate changes.”

The trap was becoming visible.

But I still did not understand how far back it went.
